Two dowels are used in a typical dowel joint to provide both precise alignment and adequate strength. The two dowels locate the pieces securely, keeping them square as glue sets, and they offer two lines of contact that resist sliding, twisting, and shear forces that can occur during handling and in use. Using only one dowel often isn’t enough to hold the pieces firmly in place and distribute load evenly, which can lead to misalignment or a weaker joint. Adding more than two dowels is usually unnecessary for standard cabinet joints and can complicate assembly or crowd the edge, reducing edge integrity. For standard joints, two dowels strike the right balance between alignment, strength, and practicality.
